MediaTek executives join OPPO, another mobile phone factory that develops its own chips?

According to the Japanese media "Nikkei Asian Review", affected by the United States' suppression of domestic high-tech companies such as Huawei, OPPO is currently stepping up its internal mobile chip design and development work and actively improving its ability to independently manufacture mobile chips, starting from MediaTek. , Huawei HiSilicon and Ziguang Zhanrui and other chip suppliers have dug top engineering talents.

According to people familiar with the matter, in order to accelerate the progress of the company's self-developed chips at full speed, OPPO has poached a number of engineers from the well-known chip supplier MediaTek and the second largest domestic chip supplier UNISOC, hoping to Shanghai formed an experienced chip team.

Not only that, there is also news that OPPO has hired Jeffrey Ju, the former chief operating officer of MediaTek and a former executive of Xiaomi, and he will serve as a consultant. OPPO also contacted senior executives from Qualcomm, Huawei HiSilicon and MediaTek, and successfully poached an executive who was involved in 5G chip development at MediaTek, which is expected to further accelerate independent research and development.

Personally, I think independent research and development of chips is a good thing. Having the ability to independently design and develop chips can help OPPO reduce its dependence on chip suppliers and improve its control over the supply chain. As an exclusive core component that no one else has, excellent self-developed chips can help OPPO establish a competitive advantage in domestic and overseas markets.

Freezing three feet is not a day's cold. Independent research and development of chips is a difficult and long road. The decision to embark on this road means a large amount of development capital expenditure, and a large number of top engineers have invested every day for several years. These efforts will take years to bear fruit.

From the current domestic point of view, only Huawei and Xiaomi have ever set foot in the road of self-developed chips. Huawei is a pioneer in independent research and development of chips and the largest chip developer in China. The HiSilicon department’s more than ten years of research and development and accumulation have created the glory of the Kirin processor today. Xiaomi is relatively young. Its chip department was established in 2014. However, after the collapse of the ThePaper S1 released in 2017, it has not yet released a second-generation mobile chip. Will OPPO's self-developed chip eventually succeed? let us wait and see.
